Dr. David Holmes from Manchester, England has researched why some smiles are brilliant and why others are more like grimaces. The ideal smile, like the one emitted by Cheryl Cole, has a balanced combination of confidence, lip and tooth health and face shape.

Human smiles developed from animals baring their teeth – but these days a beautiful smile such as Cheryl Cole’s is a magnetic, mesmerising communication designed to make us smile in return.

But Dr David Holmes at Manchester Metropolitan University’s psychology department has researched why some smiles are like grimaces – or indeed an animal baring its teeth – and why some, like Miss Cole’s, are so brilliant they can turn people into stars.
