In Australia several teeth whitening products have been pulled from the shelves after reports of unsafe levels of peroxide. Other side effects from the products include tooth sensitivity and marbled tooth color.
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission has decided to launch a campaign as an attempt to regulate the supply of do-it-yourself teeth-whiteners that are observed with unsafe levels of peroxide. Afterwards, the authorities have decided to recall around nine teeth-whitening products soon after acknowledging several complaints about injuries such as chemical burns in the mouth and gums of user.
Besides this, several such products have also imparted some severe injuries to the user including mouth and throat ulceration, blistering, marbled or unnaturally colored teeth, tingling around the mouth, tooth sensitivity along with headache.
“In addition to chemical burns to gums and the mouth, other reported injuries have included blistering or ulceration of the mouth and throat, tooth sensitivity, marbled or unnaturally coloured teeth, tissue tingling and headaches”, said Commissioner Sarah Court while insisting that consumers need to be extra cautious when making use of these teeth-whitening treatment products at home without any consultation.
